The Bagumbayan Small Artisanal Fishermen's Association of Sitio Bundas, Bagumbayan, Lupon, Davao Oriental will receive pump boats with a total project cost of P390,002.40 from Municipal Mayor Domingo A. Lim.

This fisherfolk organization in Lupon, Davao Oriental, is composed primarily of marginal fishermen, and whose business is to uplift the lives of the people of the coastal area of said municipality. About one-half of its members are still using artisanal fishing methods and a non-motorized fishing banca.

It is the general objective of the association to pursue transformation on the means of economic activity that would sustain income of members. Specific objectives of the association are the following, to wit:

  1. to establish business enterprise in fishing other than "pamayaw" thru "pangnukus" or squid jig fishing, owned and managed by the association,
  2. to generate income derived from business in order to compensate the operational cost of the project and ultimately earn a profit, and
  3. to provide job opportunities to members who will be hired to run the day-to-day activities.

The implementation of the project will check two interconnected problems of resource depletion and the persistent poverty by our fisherfolks in the coastal areas. Further, the project intends to recruit and transform more fishermen into a more concerned, active and vigilant partners of the government in Bantay Dagat Program.

The proponent is much interested to engage in Squid Jig Fishing using a motorized banca in the Davao Gulf areas, particularly in the municipal waters of Lupon, San Isidro, Banaybanay, Samal, and Governor Generoso. The project shall operate  twenty (20) units motorized fishing banca and twenty (20) units squid jid fishing gear. These are light emitting hand jigs developed by our local fishers at sitio Bundas which serve as attractant to squids.

Just as squid is so abundant in this fishing grounds, bountiful harvest is expected to generate employment and livelihood to the locality.

The project shall contribute to the national economy in terms of employment, government revenues, development of related industries and allied services.

Mayor Domingo Lim envisioned the need to provide continuing capability-building activities related to project management. The LGU also through the Municipal Agriculture Office will provide technical assistance to ensure the success of the project.
